The Special Operations Division for the Kerr County Sheriff’s Office is a newly developed division that Sheriff Leitha created to institute new programs and new investigative efforts that Sheriff Leitha felt was missing in today’s world of law enforcement. Under the direction of a Captain R. Jason Waldrip and Lieutenant Scott Gaige, this division is comprised of five (5) criminal investigators and two (2) administrative deputies.
This division oversees the training and deployment of the Special Operations Group which consists of a twelve (12) person Special Response Team (SRT) along with Crisis Negotiators who serve in an as needed basis from the Patrol Division, Criminal Investigations Division, and the Special Operations Division.
This division conducts proactive criminal investigations within the Special Investigations Unit. These investigators were previously assigned to narcotics investigations, but under this new unit these investigators will continue narcotics investigations, but also investigate gang related crimes, prostitution, human trafficking, human smuggling, domestic terrorism, illegal gambling, and fugitive apprehension.
This division also encompasses a Digital Forensic Investigative Unit. Investigators within this unit will dive into the digital world extracting and collecting evidence and intelligence from digital devices. These investigators will also conduct active investigations where crimes are committed in the digital world through acts such as network intrusions and fraud schemes utilizing identity theft through social media sources.
Additional support activities that are also responsible to this division are the public information officer, assisting in the organization of any specialized events, and dignitary protections that may occur under the jurisdiction of Kerr County Sheriff’s Office.
