Sheriff Larry Leitha and our entire Office are celebrating the graduation of two new deputies, promoted from our own ranks. Deputies Manuel Moreno and Riley McGee recently graduated from the Alamo Area Regional Law Enforcement Academy as part of KCSO’s new recruitment program.

This innovative program creates a pathway for qualified corrections officers to train, learn, and earn Texas Peace Officer licenses, with the intent of becoming KCSO Deputies. As part of the program, the KCSO covers costs for the six-month academy attendance, with a three-year employment agreement at the end. Deputy pay in Kerr County starts at $51,000.

Peace Officers in Texas must be 21 years of age, and this program creates a clear path for those new to law enforcement to gain experience as they begin their career. The program is open to all correction officers working at the Kerr County Jail.

We also congratulate our friends in blue at the Kerrville Police Department on adding five new officers from this graduating class at AARLEA. It’s an honor to serve alongside our colleagues at the KPD and we look forward to working alongside their new officers.

“We are proud of the success of this program, and we’re just getting started. We congratulate Deputies Moreno and McGee and welcome them to our great team of KCSO Deputies,” said Sheriff Leitha. “This is a win for our entire KCSO family and the community. We’re helping to expand skill sets, ensuring a full-staffed Office, and providing solid jobs and benefits for qualified applicants.”
